"Storybook Bride", oil on canvas, 28" x 24"
Collection of Kalamazoo Public Library, Kalamazoo, MI

"Storybook Bride" is a slightly altered view of one of my favorite places
the library.
In the township of Oshtemo,
outside Kalamazoo, Michigan
my branch library looks like a Postmodern fairytale castle.
The enchanting structure achieves the architect's stated goal
(…to create a facility that appears vast, ancient, and romantic
… a mythical walled complex…)
When other cities were closing libraries
Kalamazoo was building more
winning the 2002 Gale/Library Journal national Library of the Year award."

Series:

Brides
like dancers
arrive unbidden
randomly populating my paintings.
A rich tapestry of meaning
too obscure to grasp
attends their presence.
The myriad details
of our visual history
appears recorded in their gowns.
