"The Dictator", oil on canvas, 40" x 36"

A painting by any other name would be the same. "The Dictator" began life as "The Man in the Red Pants", an innocuous title, indicative of "I don't know what to call this." The title of a painting normally arrives by the same route as the painting itself, that is, by intuition, however this one took a little longer.

It was destined for an exhibit, "West, Art and the Law", sponsored by West Publishing whose specialty, legal publications, focuses the show on related themes. A new title was needed, according to my gallery, and "The Execution" was selected. Too menacing by far, returning from the show, it finally found its name as "The Dictator".
